The Citrus Orchard
Ancient Citrus Trees · Microclimate · Tradition
The ancient citrus orchard of Cala Grande can be reached through the holm oak woodland,
enclosed by a traditional stone wall and set on a small stretch of level ground just a few metres from the sea.
It is one of the estate’s most secluded and enchanting places,
where the agricultural landscape still preserves the memory of traditional cultivation.
The citrus orchard is home to heritage lemon varieties, alongside sweet and bitter oranges, mandarins and grapefruits.
The proximity of the sea and the natural shelter provided by the woodland create a favourable microclimate,
helping to moderate temperatures and reduce the risk of frost during winter.
The colours of the fruit and the fragrance of the blossoms mark the changing seasons,
creating a lush and secluded setting.
The citrus fruits are harvested and enjoyed fresh or made into marmalades,
preserving knowledge rooted in seasonality and the estate’s agricultural traditions.
At the heart of the citrus orchard lies the historic Vascone,
once used as a water reservoir for irrigation
and now a valuable feature of the estate’s heritage and landscape.
